Luzon Island, the main northern island in the Philippines is composed of several regions; National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and Bicol Region.

Also considered within the Luzon Region are some separate islands in the MIMAROPA Region, which include Mindoro, Palawan, and Romblon.

In the Central Luzon Region lie Angeles City/Clark and Subic Bay/Olongapo. Previously, both areas were the home to U.S. naval and air bases which were closed down. However, in recent years, both have become tourism magnets within the country. Angeles City/Clark for its international airport and nightlife, Subic Bay/Olongapo for its proximity to the port and various resorts and golf courses.

Hidden away in northern Luzon is Vigan, the oldest surviving city of Spanish architecture in the Philippines. Ancestral houses as well as other structures here very much depict the Spanish colonial period. Antique churches, official buildings, and residences, cobbled narrow streets, and horse-drawn calesas (carriages) all take us back to the bygone colonial era.

The presence of whale sharks in Donsol waters has placed this municipality in Sorsogon, Bicol Region, on the international tourism map. The local government, in cooperation with resorts and scuba diving associations, offers more than a few packages for you to discover up close and personal these gentle giants of the sea. Locally they are referred to as Butanding (Whale Sharks).

Aside from whale shark watching, tourists too can enjoy numerous water recreation activities such as diving, snorkeling, and kayaking.

The Visayas Region comprises Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas. The Visayan Islands consist of Panay, Negros, Cebu, Leyte, Bohol and a couple of other islands. The word Bisaya refers to the region of Visayan Islands in the Philippines.

Escape the bustling and sometimes crowded city of Cebu and chart a course straight northward to the peaceful and beautiful island of Malapascua where you'll be able to interact with thresher sharks, mandarin fish, whitetip sharks, and pygmy seahorses, among other sea creatures making their home there. Malapascua is situated at the northern tip of Cebu Province, right in the heart of the Visayas. Make Malapascua a part of your not-to-miss dive destinations in the Philippines, and you definitely will not be disappointed.
